Chin Surgery

People who have chins that stick out or sink inward are sometimes a good candidate for chin surgery. Those who also have problems with their bite may also need jaw surgery.

During chin surgery, the chin bone is cut. Depending on whether the chin recedes or protrudes, the upper or lower portion of the cut chin bone is moved forward or backward.

The procedure also may require the lower chin to be affixed with a wire until the surgical area heals and the bone sets.

In some cases, people with sunken chins may benefit from an artificial chin, which is placed in front of the bone to increase its prominence.
